Renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima, celebrated for her work with the firm SANAA, extended her distinct design philosophy into the realm of transportation with the creation of a unique train. The Seibu "Laview" Express Train
Project Commission: Kazuyo Sejima was commissioned by the Japanese private railway operator Seibu Railway to design their new flagship limited express train. This train, named "Laview," was conceived to replace the aging "Red Arrow" fleet and offer a new standard in passenger comfort and aesthetic appeal.
Design Philosophy and Concept: Sejima's core concept for Laview was "a train that blends into the landscape" and provides an experience akin to "relaxing in a living room." This guiding principle influenced every aspect of the train's design, from its exterior form to its interior ambiance.
Key Architectural and Design Features:
- Exterior Form: The most striking exterior feature is its rounded, silver-hued front, designed with a large, single-piece curved glass panel for the driver's cabin, providing an almost 180-degree view. The body is painted a subtle aluminum that reflects the surrounding scenery, helping it to visually merge with its environment.
- Expansive Windows: Passenger cars feature exceptionally large, continuous windows (1,350 mm high x 1,580 mm wide) that curve up to meet the roofline. This design maximizes natural light and provides passengers with panoramic views, blurring the boundary between the interior and the external landscape.
- Interior Ambiance: The interior is characterized by a bright yellow color scheme for the seats, chosen to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
